Shadow Dancer
By Beth Byrne

Once Upon a time there was a very lonely Princess named Samantha, Sam lived in a land were there weren't any children her own age, which made  her a very unhappy young Princess. Her Father loved the Princess very much and wished her to be happy but nothing he did could help his daughter.
Sam would take long walks in the woods around the castle where she lived and visit with the animals, but after years of doing this even that didn't give her comfort any more. Still the animals in the forest looked forward to Sam’s coming everyday so she continued to go, one day unbeknownst to her at the time she had wondered farther then usual, fearing she had gotten herself lost she became scared and just ran in the direction she felt was toward Home.
Sam felt like she had run for hours, tired she fell to the ground and started weeping, after sitting there for a while she looked around to see where she was, and saw some thing shinning through the trees.  Having nothing better to do at the moment she went to see what the shinning object was, as she walked through the clearing in the woods she found herself standing in front of a weeping willow tree unlike any thing she had ever seen before.  The tree was gold and was growing next to the most beautiful pool she had ever seen.  The pool was so clear that the reflection from the tree let off an almost magical golden glow surrounding the whole clearing. The longer Sam remained at the clearing the happier she got, and after being there for some hours she got her barring and decided to head for home.
As Sam was walking home she made a promise to herself not to let anyone know about the tree or the beautiful pool, it would be hers and hers alone.  After getting home, she was met by her father at the door, who had been very worried about her, when he asked where she had been, being true to the promise to herself and not wanting to lie to her father she just said ”walking in the woods” her father warned her about being back before dark and being careful while in the woods,  and she agreed quietly remembering  the way back to the pool.
Every day Sam would return to this pool not quite understanding why it gave her so much joy, Maybe it was because she had found it, it was hers and no one eltce had ever see it.
One day on the way to the pool she heard a loud noise, Sam got very scared remembering her fathers warnings about being careful, but something told her to go and see what it was, she stood there for a long time until curiosity got the better of her and she proceeded slowly toward the continuing noise. As she walked the noise got louder and she realized it was right in front of her through some brush to thick to see through. She hesitated only a moment before pushing the brush aside to peek through, what she saw would change her life forever.
There in the woods caught in a mass of brush was the most beautiful black horse she had ever seen, as she got closer she saw he had run through some brush and gotten his legs all tangled up, he was tired and hurt from all the struggling he had done. She decided that the best way to handle the situation was to walk up very slowly and see how bad he was actually caught.
cautiously she approached whispering in a quiet soothing voice until she got close enough to see what had happened, standing just a few feet from the animal she realized it wasn't a horse at all, it was a unicorn, “a unicorn?” just a fantasy she said to herself,  but there he was standing right in front of her.
He allowed her to get very close, she could see every muscle in his body tense when she reached for him, but he stood “sensing she was there to help” Sam thought to herself.  But it was no use such a small girl and he was so tangled. After trying for a long time, she decided to go back on her promise to herself, to save the unicorn, she would tell her father and get him to help.
Sam ran home as fast as she could to get her father and return before he could do any more damage to himself.  She asked  her father to help free the black horse tangled in the woods, her father got some men together and followed Sam to the tired animal.  After freeing him her father realized it wasn’t a horse at all,  with astonishment he listened to Sam’s tale about how she had found the pool and the unicorn. Sam realized they had to bring the unicorn home or he would surly not service his injuries. They led the unicorn home and Sam nursed him back to health.
The day came when the unicorn was better and Sam’s father seeing how happy the unicorn made her had him broke to ride and gave him to Sam. She named him Shadow Dancer and they had many happy times together riding through the woods to the pool and playing in the fenced pasture he was kept in.  The longer Dancer remained at the castle the closer he and Sam got, And the longer he was fenced and unable to run the unhappier Dancer got, Sam decided one day her happiness wasn’t worth Dancers unhappiness and she told her father she was going to let him go,  to be free and happy.
Sam walked into the pasture kissed Dancer on the nose said good bye and opened the gate, he stood for along time looking at Sam before he left and disappeared into the woods, Sam wondered to herself if she would ever see him again.
After a few days Dancer returned to his dear friend, the friend that had saved him from being tangled in the brush, had nursed him back to health, and had loved him enough to set him free when he was unhappy. Sam was so excited to see him she ran out and hugged the unicorns neck.
From that day on Dancer was free to come and go as he pleased, and he returned from the woods every day to take Sam for a ride to the pool they both loved.
As Sam grew up she found she didn’t need Dancer as much as she used to and the times that Dancer came to visit became fewer and fewer, until one day he stopped coming altogether. Sam was married and had a daughter of her own, and understood the loneliness her daughter felt.
Until one day she looked out her window and saw her daughter riding a beautiful black unicorn out of the woods, she knew from that day on her daughter would never be lonely again and that she had found the pool, Sam had found so many years ago.  Thinking about that time in her life brought great joy to Sam and she knew one day her daughter would stand at this same window and recall her happy memories as well, and that made her happier then she had ever been in her life.
